Show Notes:

This week on WPblab Jason Tucker, Bridget Willard speak with James Laws and Josh Pollock about their WordPress Form Plugins. They share a brief history about each and compare and contrast on the features each provides. We spend some time discussing the other players in this space and breakdown the pricing models and what lead them to go with the fremium model (Free core plugin, paid addons).

  80. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 12:58 pm

  86. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:00 pm

    James is definitely the Garfunkel. 😛

  87. Emanuel Costa on March 31, 2016 at 1:00 pm

    @RealResultMedia perhaps it’s not a GF issue. I use GF a lot also and never had problems with email notifications.

  88. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:00 pm

  99. David Bell on March 31, 2016 at 1:04 pm

    Roger that.

  100. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:04 pm

    Mandrill was the go-to until they changed their pricing model

  101. David Bell on March 31, 2016 at 1:04 pm

    WO8d it be fair to say that WP(mail) should simply be replaced on general principles?

  102. Kathrynclang on March 31, 2016 at 1:07 pm

    WordPress folks are AMAZING

  103. Kathrynclang on March 31, 2016 at 1:07 pm

  116. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:13 pm

    Your a great Gang – Glad I found this today

  118. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:13 pm

    then @jasontucker shares to linkedin

  119. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:13 pm

    another example… tracking which Facebook ad someone clicked on by using URL parameters

  120. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:13 pm

    @kevinwhoffman wow

  121. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:14 pm

    we use hidden fields to track lead sources from ads and calculate ROI on each ad

  122. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:14 pm

    @kevinwhoffman nice. You’re pretty smart.

  123. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:15 pm

    current page hidden fields are great for tech support

  124. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:15 pm

    @kevinwhoffman Sounds great.

  125. Kathrynclang on March 31, 2016 at 1:16 pm

    Thanks guys – great to know that even the masters don’t know everything 🙂

  126. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:18 pm

    @kstover Good point.

  127. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:19 pm

    Forums put the burden of knowledge on the user to know what their problem is.

  128. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:19 pm

    They often know the symptoms but not the actual problem.

  129. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:19 pm

    Forums are good for power users and not as good for normal users.

  130. Emanuel Costa on March 31, 2016 at 1:19 pm

    They have tons of content indexed on Google from theirs forum that is closed for 3 years now I think

  131. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:20 pm

    Gravity Forms + Help Scout integration has been awesome for tagging support requests on the way in. Not sure if you guys have Help Scout add-ons.

  132. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:20 pm

    @kevinwhoffman WordImpress/Give uses HelpScout now.

  133. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:20 pm

    @kevinwhoffman We do!

  134. Emanuel Costa on March 31, 2016 at 1:21 pm

    site:gravityhelp.com/forums = About 57,400 results

  135. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:21 pm

    Cool, I’m seeing a lot of WP plugin companies going to Help Scout

  136. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:21 pm

    @kevinwhoffman 🙂

  137. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:21 pm

    Dang.. I’m late

  138. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:21 pm

    @heyadamsilver Thanks for coming here. 😀

  139. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:22 pm

    Agree with @Josh412. Again, support forums put way too much burden of knowledge on the average user.

  140. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:22 pm

    @kstover As a beginner, it’s overwhelming. 🙂

  141. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:23 pm

  144. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:23 pm

    not to harp on help scout, but the combination of help docs, email support, and the ability to quickly organize and delegate emails in the dashboard is awesome

  145. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:23 pm

    @kevinwhoffman No, I’m sure you’re right.

  146. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:23 pm

    @kevinwhoffman – We don’t use Helpscout because they don’t have a major feature we need: priority.

  147. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:23 pm

    We currently use Desk.com

  148. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:24 pm

    WordPress.org needs a +1 (vote up) for people who leave reviews a la Amazon.com to validate the reviewer.

  149. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:24 pm

    GitHub that.

  150. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:24 pm

    @kstover Ah yeah that is a bummer. We use tags to sort of make up for that.

  151. Josh Pollock on March 31, 2016 at 1:24 pm

    We went Help Scout last week. FTW!

  152. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:24 pm

    I’m sure you’re dealing with larger quantities than us though 🙂

  153. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:25 pm

    Among other things.

  154. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:25 pm

    active installs is better.

  155. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:25 pm

    @kevinwhoffman Yeah. Desk has automatic priority bumping. So, we can track how long a user has been waiting on an answer.

  156. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:26 pm

    but active on a site isnt the same as really using!

  157. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:26 pm

    @heyadamsilver It’s not?

  158. Emanuel Costa on March 31, 2016 at 1:26 pm

    wp.org plugins should also have a “response time” from devs.

  159. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:26 pm

    Welcome @n0x_dg !

  160. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:26 pm

    nope.. i’ve seen sites with form plugins installed.. with no actual forms in use.

  161. Jason Tucker on March 31, 2016 at 1:26 pm

    @n0x_dg welcome!

  162. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:26 pm

    they’ve tried it.. left it installed.. but not in actual use

  163. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:27 pm

    @emanweb But that would depend on a .org support system, which most devs want to get away from

  164. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:27 pm

    I read those pinned posts!

  165. Josh Pollock on March 31, 2016 at 1:27 pm

    Thanks Adam!

  166. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:27 pm

    I’m an outlier !

  167. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:27 pm

    @Josh412 u bet!

  168. Josh Pollock on March 31, 2016 at 1:27 pm

    Exactly

  169. Emanuel Costa on March 31, 2016 at 1:28 pm

    for that they could have: response time = see dev forum.

  170. Emanuel Costa on March 31, 2016 at 1:28 pm

    or support site

  171. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:29 pm

    @jameslaws say it aint so!

  172. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:30 pm

    ultimate first world problem – the GUI is too pretty.

  178. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:31 pm

    of time or money

  179. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:31 pm

    usually both

  180. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:32 pm

    It “WAS” easy.. and is .. on a scale of 1-10…. to a “3” .. then its a learning curve.. and INVESTMENT

  181. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:32 pm

    @heyadamsilver It is an investment.

  182. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:32 pm

    These WordPress.org reporting/data issues have given rise to products aimed at developers like Freemius

  183. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:32 pm

    yep. better mindset vs expense

  184. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:32 pm

    props to me. 🙂

  185. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:32 pm

    @Josh412 Pipedream!

  186. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:33 pm

    @jameslaws Is that really why though or is it to hide their otherwise GPL code behind a wall?

  187. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:33 pm

    @jameslaws did you just call people -inassas?

  188. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:33 pm

    It’s also not as cute as Ninja Forms Three. 🙂

    🙁

  192. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:34 pm

    @kevinwhoffman I don’t think it’s because it helps hide the code.

  193. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:34 pm

    @heyadamsilver – You mean like Toejam and Earl?

  194. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:34 pm

    @kstover It can certainly be a benefit though. You’re not at risk of a knockoff being thrown up on github.

  195. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:35 pm

    @kstover nice pull.. but was referencing actual toe jam!

  196. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:35 pm

    @kstover ya. i know of it.

  197. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:36 pm

    @kevinwhoffman I can’t speak to the intentions of all companies, but all of our source code is already on GitHub, and from our experience, that’s not ever been an issue.

  198. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:37 pm

    @Josh412 looking forward to testing it.. its on my list . for the podcast.

  208. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:39 pm

    @kevinwhoffman – I agree. If we go SaaS, that won’t be our motivation. Again, we’ve never experienced any negatives from being open.

  209. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:40 pm

  212. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:40 pm

    @kevinwhoffman – Our customers aren’t developers who are surfing GitHub for repos.

  213. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:41 pm

    @jasontucker I see what you did there. 🙂

  214. Kevin Hoffman on March 31, 2016 at 1:41 pm

    @kstover and I love that as a user and member of the WP community, but I think SaaS has been used by some to get around the openness of the GPL

  215. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:41 pm

    @kevinwhoffman I was wondering how SaaS will affect plugin development

  216. Jason Tucker on March 31, 2016 at 1:41 pm

  256. Adam Silver on March 31, 2016 at 1:48 pm

    @YouTooCanBeGuru Image result for pronounce gif
    The debate over how to pronounce GIF, which stands for Graphics Interchange Format, re-emerged this week when Steve Wilhite, the inventor of the widely used Web illustration, declared it should be pronounced “jif,” like the brand of peanut butter, rather than with a hard G sound.May 23, 2013

  257. Bridget Willard on March 31, 2016 at 1:49 pm

    @heyadamsilver I say JIF

  258. Kevin Stover on March 31, 2016 at 1:49 pm
