the water cooled three hundred in nineteen under nineteen I I know I took a look it up and actually like update the website everything to be able to do it so three nineteen of you playing along at home your today if you want to court I call meaning to take a look at our website all the stuff that we have going on over there %HESITATION let's go around the room a quick get everyone into dances no we can't do sponsors we what is what's I don't know you know I don't have like a code of conduct type thing going on weird little whatever and you know that they may or may not be in this room how about that so %HESITATION let's go run and we're quick get everyone introduced see read well your head is about okay yeah you would you we had going on yourself you know I think that %HESITATION rainy days they read and I make a report media on all the state the %HESITATION believe it live from the I believe all right that's cool %HESITATION because remember you told by yourself everybody chasing Costner you can't if out my own way in the building online %HESITATION A. K. A. Kerr auto loader here with the V. P. watercooler news Jamal and John Brown assignment sitting out in the audience I'm happy to be here awesome good to have you on as always Leo about you tells about yourself Hey everyone I am one of the organisers here at work camp Orange County that's where we are yeah and we're planning some like stuff in Long Beach your long beaches I do it's like my bones along beats my phone was actually from Long Beach it is outside the order yeah we actually have like things and we have it without hands it limits yeah %HESITATION you know we we organize things up there too so what we're actually gonna be hosting or can't coming up soon %HESITATION probably like October or December but I yeah that's that's me I do that stuff among other things I do work press things and %HESITATION I actually like help organize accord press corps stuff to which I think we can talk about that everyone could wish to reach different I got some questions like a wonderful idea yeah I am here for hi am Hans these they get on the founders he can %HESITATION active are in the US you would press meet up and I'm one of the organisers for were camp Orange County what what what are you doing up there I am of them I have gradually I'm just into %HESITATION on Twitter my website is Jason talk about blog %HESITATION I do this show as well as other so called to be people lab Devin's on Thursdays refer you go take a look at that that's a great show we're talk about social media marketing and all that fun stuff I'm also %HESITATION be one of the word press %HESITATION are one of the word well the word press meet up %HESITATION if you sign post yeah right and that's literally here thing %HESITATION over in with yourself for free to go take a look at that you go find us over on %HESITATION on our meetup website I think you six of my party yep yep I am also organizer of working at Long Beach %HESITATION and I'm gonna be organizing the after party and %HESITATION you should all anyone I can't see the audience like always easy for group all but %HESITATION you should all put that on your radar you got a goal sleep right now really want front row many people just flipping as the bird I mean not very accurate the weekly arrives so when we talk about today so leave us some a core contributors such we do core contributors home okay so today at work Cambridge county I saw John Andrews yours is an awesome arcade shooter is a Cork commuter actually has the ability to write code to the word press corps stopped to get a great talk on how to contribute and he talked about how he went on his like journey working at Boston University all the way through to now doing a bunch of cool stuff of blue host and like helping teach people that you gotta build the stuff otherwise the platform is a habit and %HESITATION yeah like there's definitely a lot there but I'd maybe we can talk a little about how maybe we got involved in doing stuff in the word press space and maybe %HESITATION talk about some of the controversy maybe what what you said something interesting so he is not just come he is a commuter yes what's the difference so you can contribute a small is that your contribution you can just go be a so you so you can Mike rudos your contributions yeah you can give to the word press course but I just I just wanna make sure I heard right it's legal now Steve it's okay that's where you put a larger contribution in water and then a little bit at a time you go ahead and just dilute contribution all you usually usually Jonathan called earlier he called it a drive by contributor you can just like drop in one patch and the like by everyone file bugs you know just a small right like you you got to help out the project in whatever way that's appropriate for you know that you can give okay and so what's committee added everybody loves it when people add commas an Oxford comma it was like it was combine you need it put it in there yeah people don't like would be would be a small like thing because people that support to the project itself and that's a microsd that's a microsecond the the other is sort of and there's a bunch of Cork %HESITATION core contributors who have done a lot of work over time you have core commit access can basically right to the wordpress trunk that they see something that's really important that they know what needs to happen they make sure it happens and there's a whole bunch of them you can see them on the website some of a really cool people actually older the ones that are so but my former colleague western reader for example had does incredible stuff with PHP engine they said who works with the White House hopes the White House dot org like to arouse talk of doing all kinds of really cool stuff like these people are really smart %HESITATION cookies and they're if they're trying to help the White House I believe for the record you can help the White House used to help the White House I don't think you still there I don't I don't know I don't know if that can be inaccurate but I I don't believe it's the would be to make it happen so we could be the we relied on controversy well it's really important that the community finds a way to communicate so like there's a bunch of different ways we do it there's %HESITATION what they call the P. two blogs there's a space we will post office but these people kind of goal either around matters or work there owns are designed to just make sure the platform doesn't fall apart so the commuters they are not taking small doses but there instead the the full any they're they're doing it every single day most the time %HESITATION and some people are more active I %HESITATION I mean they're doing really because because that's your range it's it's Mike or those are full weigh on me yes well I jotted richer's like helped write a ton of stuff in privacy's help it's time to stop in short codes like stuff the people are caring about but really should and if they didn't do that work a lot of the stuff that actually the platform needs wouldn't get done so my my getting a look at the plaza the people who doing the core stuff %HESITATION but you know when it when it's ready for you whatever you're doing it so how do we get involved in this like as somebody who's not a or contributor but how how does someone right now in those waters our server the mighty start you start with like the oil on the internet what it is I as far as I understand the probably best way is to join with the work first or %HESITATION username join the slack figure out the communities it you probably fit the best insert your designer you could do that stuff you're like Jason your performance along with a whole bunch of really cool stuff is always performance things %HESITATION if you're like Stephen only or do is talk about business there's probably a place for that somewhere all right yeah they're really not know there there's really not that there's no place and I just there actually is a little bit of the dirt on the plate and this is something that's been a topic of conversation among the people %HESITATION in general is that there is less of a place where people who are not that contributing technically to contribute and that's something that I think has been over the past six months or so gotten more attention in terms of how can you contribute in a way if you're not necessarily a cardholder or you know feel comfortable enough to do you know holder whatnot so that me I think you need more and more work so just saying you know you can contribute however you can totally again but some of those contributions require more effort because there's not an easy way to do that yeah so for people who do you want to make a technical contribution and something that they do pretty well on track %HESITATION is they have a tag called the good first bug and that is great for people who are like okay I know my way around PHP I'm not shy with it I want to start contributing like maybe they have a plug in or two in the repo but they haven't taken that first step to to run at the core code a good first bug is a fantastic way to do that I just pulled it up and it looks like there are a hundred and fifty six bugs take good first bug in there so if you all have done plugin where and %HESITATION are ready to take that step and actually you know commit to core and have your name in the release notes so I'll make a good it's a start and I'm I'm on so I'm not familiar with the so so these bugs are tracked and tagged as good first bug meeting some weeks ago and and tackle that is the first project caressing okay yeah got it it's good let in evaluating the bugs like for the good parts not because of its like names and he's like yeah you should be like probably a little more complicated a hundred hours so there are people like like me and a bunch of others who help maintain each of the components of wordpress so they usually get tag associated with one of those and then we will go through those issues and look for essentially stuff that hopefully is going to be easy or straight forward or simple hopefully and we will talk about stuff and we say all right I know this patch only requires like three lines of changes I can totally make that in an hour but I can also give it to someone else and hopefully they can tackle it and they they get their first contribution they get used to make a pot at that feels normal now okay and that is how all of them very simple bugs never get fixed take well there are actually people who like like the like literally died in a track looking for old still tickets are like I want to kill those tickets at what the matter here they're people who like to do their best to to triage and a call gardening his is a common one say the clean up the garden okay on the weeds out as Scott Taylor is really good at weeding out the super old stuff but when hanging fruit super on stuff that nobody is really paying attention to %HESITATION though one of the last the word press that he did the lead on there were a ridiculous number of commits where Scott was just like there are patches for this like why have we not like pull this thing so he's he's closing out tickets that may not even be relevant anymore it closing about that may not be relevant merging patch is that it's like yeah why don't we have the same here but they still exist so they need to be a well lately %HESITATION I need to get other people I mean it's it's quick and that needs to get done we'll get it done whatever we need to do and if something sets for too long say Hey like this issues open it back I think there's a probably an issue to that sitting with me but she probably get addressed because that's what happens that would be good for us but for you going through and get the best deal what happens if the but if the the bug is part of something that's deprecated like is there is there like a way where it's like this whole section of code is man is now deprecated but let's get a little mildly controversial things like short codes XML RPC even maybe RSS feeds like stuff that people heavily using wordpress this stuff you might consider baby considered legacy or even deprecated eventually by the project and how we tackle the stuff like do we added features to short code for example really we're talking legacy that would I did I heard the classic editor it's work we're living in a pose that world that was that was controversial yeah yeah you heard it here and you know that I was is no longer as important we're trying to build things and blocks and that's a it's harder it's better it's got a lot more flexibility for certain kinds of things but it's entirely different it's we have to start answering the question repeatedly so dealing with little stuff so do they kill those bugs learned that are a deprecated code do they say like hello this is going to anyhow or whatever or something else is going on here at this because it's going to be pulled off into a plug and or or something like that well depends sometimes some of the coordinators may say like this is really important we know this is important they might still make that patch someone might also say that is an important disclosing it will fix it but they're still you know versions of four nine being released yeah for security patches that still you still have to actually all the way back to three point six I believe yeah they're they're people for whatever reason who have been updated to work press for Plano well one four point five one one four point nine like %HESITATION it's clear %HESITATION but we can still on there they really are %HESITATION like people who are in like three you didn't mistake five point out you really meant that system is people definitely are pushing back all the way through as much as possible so if I find a bug that's in like the blogroll for links I could submit it and then somebody is going to have to go and fix okay good now I know that I want to first but don't do that I I I yeah you know I might get killed is a is a won't fix because links or yeah yeah yeah yeah exciting stuff yeah along with that %HESITATION I actually do not remember where I read that I read to many things and I don't track them enough but and there is something that %HESITATION someone talking recently about the contact the badge collectors so there are these folks you're kind of %HESITATION you know making their way to the community and looking to essentially collect all of which you probably have you all probably have there somewhere although little badges that have the different icons on them %HESITATION the different types of contribution and vision that you can do in the community and that I I read a really great article that they hate please don't just contribute you contribute that to be a bad collector because we you know it's not about coming in like I think earlier and changing a comma you know and then being like gap on the work of Jupiter and now you know having not bad that's something to be aware of what's what's wrong with that right could we it is used to coming in you fixing something even if it's small and you're collecting a bad what's what's the problem there could we just make the badger comma I I don't know what the problem is that are you saying probably just the knowing I gather another Avenue this either are you seeing this game cation in this on accident but not really okay I mean like I I talking to Jonathan about his experience Abbas university he was working on multi site stuff right it was like we got this really big scary thing at our university it's hard it's a little broke in it doesn't have there's doesn't have that so we're making these changes ideally a word press corps so everyone benefits most often becomes is to do the things you want to do like he's trying to do this stuff with that purpose right like you should be doing things with a from coming to a good place the bad just don't really mean anything it's like four square swarm right like doesn't really mean anything I mean everything they don't mean anything looking long babies at we're talking he just said the polka Mungo does not count it's like who's on whose line is it anyway that anybody in the crowd is made up of the points I mean the points you matter because it's %HESITATION the internet running water right yes but I mean in the grand scheme of things a little badger your profile maybe more badges solution you know well yeah more badges there we go yeah catch them all right I'd be more bad it is absolutely absolutely depletion because are you can even like now I think the group you know you can get badges for or participating in the group you can be like a conversation starter %HESITATION all the things and honestly even if you don't want to be game of five you're like kind of resisting game five like me %HESITATION you can't help but feel like that I I really have to go to work and get another one so I think I'll do it so there is definitely a motivation factor you know that's the reason everything and being game of the cat in the hat give us a side give us for you to say when we threw the badges out and hear me out %HESITATION replace them with that office so you actually knew how to catch them all I I yeah well I like this is like that so like a dock walk walk %HESITATION in like %HESITATION absolutely XSS bug %HESITATION into yeah I mean and also %HESITATION think about the people who make custom WAP is like how much like business activity we can give them it nonstop it's not often stop yeah yeah I think I want to unfortunately nobody is listening to the show except the people sitting in this audience stuff and I'm sorry high seven but I I have stuff to differ but yes well I mean I don't know I I'd like I feel like doing really good P. H. P. really good Java scripts writing things with purpose thinking about what presses a product that's really hard and if gamification can help people actually get involved more I mean why not lean into it as opposed to lean against it those things all sound WAP who were they to me they they definitely do so how do we how do we take an idea like this and then pitch it to somebody and then how do we get another part of the organization to hear that which how does that work like hell the things he was saying or whoever asked that is is one part of wordpress talking to the other part of wordpress I don't know well there's I know you guys are running around there's definitely one of the community people I I know Kenny chaos is back there right you got to go find the people who have ideas right here she's waving at me yes so so you if you wait switch back to the one who's right now face okay cool make it happen so if you if you get at all ideally shop to meetings you meet people you say Hey I have a crazy idea they say that's crazy but I love it that's usually how the community embraces things were pretty open to whatever so if it's a like Scott shows up to my meet up and says Hey I really really wants to see more stuff about in a tax I would say heck yes do you want to give a talk will say yes right it doesn't matter what you're doing we have to be a community to talk I mean I wasn't I was laughing near you there's there's a group that %HESITATION started in %HESITATION in the wordpress slack not too long ago with in the past couple years %HESITATION the wordpress hosting group so a bunch of homeless both managed and just standard webos have joined together to talk about how to make wordpress a you know like this is the bait basically here's best practices here are the things that we can be doing even sharing wake %HESITATION server config information with each other to make sure that the word press experience or anybody that comes to one of like the you know dozens or maybe even a hundred hosts that all want to participate can do that and they can actually have like a head start on here is a best practice for your wordpress static like yellow staying well and and that's and that's and that's good because it's it's it's doing those things that it's all good for all of their brands yeah right yeah I was speaking a lot of the hosts are really similar now and that's good you should have staging should have back ups %HESITATION and those hosted really fight to differentiate between customer service and prayer they think they're similar they're not they're not that similar when you get into an eight day after the Miller date but they act in very different ways the card is the key part right so like getting but like poster are a lot more similar than they are dissimilar and understanding that and fighting the differences that really do matter like that's that happens as a result of people collaborating in trying to make sure that everything on the internet as fast not just one host and that's yeah absolutely and cost for once again I want to for being hosted so this doesn't happen the hosting one he walks around like this like a little is a little host server just just imagine a a walk through with my crazy hair and beard and that'll ICS your badge I literally there you go I think we need to get the fashion so that like maybe this is something we can have a word can't Long Beach we %HESITATION we can have like fashion so that we can put all of our badges and all of our walk without it like weird words yeah I'm I'm really I'm really relieved to say because I really because of the way you're coming through it sounded like you said we needed fascists similar sassy sashes more last bastion we'll be a house dog we can we can wear and then have our badges and be like you know like in the Boy Scouts and the girl and where all of our working well like Megan was I think you have your theme is your theme yeah in they just got very excited so the never happened do do we want to we want to talk about our other topic or do a scrap that for this one but yeah go for it we think had been didn't you know we we got a little bit time but that might be good because a be a cliffhanger enough to listen to really excellent yeah and so the question from the audience and it and I'm truly paraphrasing this question the way based on the way I heard it is do the internal wordpress development teams actually talk to each other %HESITATION short answer is yes %HESITATION long and plans it's really hard to talk to people all across the world we all a sink we are all in fifteen different locations so it's hard but let's let's let's talk about that the nature of the question right let's talk about the purpose of the question yeah and why the question was asked in first place right yeah and why is controversial okay so there's a lot of complicated nature is when you're building software does matter what kind of top of your building and there's a lot of different communities that are sort of like a clear is that the larger thing and so the hard part is there is so much information there's so much communication and how do you actually get all of those people to read the things to hear the things everything is like if you go to like that the meta or the core chats there's hundreds of messages per every ten minutes it's like really hard to follow so like do people actually read all those things I don't know if people actually listened I don't know and then when people say you didn't hear the thing that I said that was there was on the P. to blog about this in this but like we tried literally the reason why don't you select fire hose your question is maybe the bigger question it is black the right %HESITATION communication method or all of these developers and community members to be talking to each other all over the world I mean I I I find it difficult personally to it like a P. for P. five whatever number up there now we do a roundup type poster something that says like Hey this is what's changed the hosting space or Hey this is what's changing a plug ins right as it takes to get the ins because it's really hard to like filter through it so unless you are actively doing this is a full time job which I'm not like I am as a court Jupiter like on doing as a part of my life but a very small art by ten hours a week at most elsewhere as the people who do it full time can keep up I and I can't remember where this came up because this came up for us a couple weeks ago but talking about either the wheel commerce team or the or the jet pack team of the core team or something something yeah I was released and wasn't working within court wasn't a plug in right exactly what it was like I can't remember off the jet pack part of it sound maybe it was during the topic that we were discussing that but it's the yeah the the I don't think that the idea of how do you get those two to really communicate really read how how are they can you how are they communicate you know once we know what you know what it does is we were talking about like and I think I think I brought it I think I brought up the question of like is there a sense of like a hallway that these folks are able to like bump into each other on the internet through some slack where they're like Hey so what's up with this %HESITATION what's up with that and and how do those people interact with each other what's up with that I mean I have to say people try their best to talk but yeah it's hard you know there's so many people involved and you really have to be active with it and you also have to be willing to listen to other people and you want to collaborate and you want to work out in the open weight back that %HESITATION reading in slack is like not good for accessibility make black almost unusable in my opinion because without reading it's almost impossible to stay on topic and then at the same time people like don't read because it's not accessible so it it covers a lot of problems yeah so ready mechanism but they tell people not to use it well it's not excessively like compliant with the way the screen readers like sit on top of it so the black actually has a problem it's really hard if you're using a screen reader to use that with it's possible but it doesn't really work well to the advice is if you're using slack with an accessible needed community don't use those threats which means that those conversations become really messy and we're dealing with this chaos at every while yeah I think that the giants group tax that you don't you don't know who half the people are when answering a question that someone had two days ago and then responding to someone else would comment that someone else is already responded to and it's the giant anything great conversation and then all of a sudden how expect that to work really seamlessly and should be like and get and get really mad people if they don't listen and haven't heard something and if it's a little crazy the expectations verses the reality is really out of whack have you have you ever logged in the slack channel saying that I'm in right now it's magnet it it's a lot it's can be very overwhelming also something that we were talking about is like the hallway idea of having a place where people can discuss things with one another %HESITATION really like the core room is for core and the second you start kind of B. S. saying with other folks about something else you get reminded Hey this room is for core okay where can I go well we don't really have a room that y'all can chat and go on Twitter yell at each other yeah each other and that's that is what Twitter is for is just yelling at each other no I I'm I'm not familiar with that not everybody uses Twitter and a lot of the wordpress development community at least has a slacker account and and can if it you know they might not hang on that but yeah maybe we do need a hallway only channel maybe I I Gen hard to argue two main communication tool within the word press community are black asynchronous non red and black and Twitter now yeah yeah but but that yeah he doesn't mean that every like developers in a is it useful for this communication that on things I don't I still don't think you are very useful for this kind of communication either they're very isolated and so we're talking about you know how did the whole entire community get access to that you know if we're talking about right how do people contribute how people participate we are hiring him well we need a need %HESITATION block %HESITATION badge for better communication so like if you communicate better you earn that badge and you can just go back to your old ways perfect we solve all the world's problems here there was I think you all in the audience for hanging out with us really appreciate it gore to our website I did you work with a calm you can look at all the things there and how to subscribe to our core dot com slash subscribe and %HESITATION Steven all the folks here that we're doing %HESITATION that you know the the the the work camp here are really appreciate having the opportunity to have this been you and bill to discuss the source that's lost thank you very much all you have a good rest your night life the disappearance of it hello everyone leave say up there all day we grew up there during plague heckle the crowd see you yeah
This week on WPwatercooler we streamed live from WordCamp Orange County 2019. The majority of our regulars on WPwatercooler are local to Southern California and many of us attended WordCamp OC. The WordCamp organizers were gracious in giving us a timeslot just before their legendary Plugin-a-palooza event they do each year. As with most WPwatercooler episodes, we didn’t have a topic planned and asked the audience what we should talk about. Here is the result!
Panelists: Sé Reed, Leo Postovoit, Steve Zehngut, Jason Tucker, and Jason Cosper
